Annual visitation and visitor origins
VISIT FLORIDA’s 2024 visitation estimates put total Florida visitation at 142.9 million, up 1.6% from 2023. The revised 2023 estimate was 140.6 million, an increase of 2.3% year over year, and revised domestic visitation for that year was the highest ever recorded. The 2024 total was therefore both a record and part of a continuing increase in travel volume.
Domestic travel was the largest component by a wide margin. Florida recorded 130.7 million domestic visitors in 2024, up 1.3% year over year. The state also received an estimated 8.9 million overseas visitors, up 6.6%, and 3.3 million Canadian visitors, up 1.2%. These are separate visitor-origin categories reported by VISIT FLORIDA.
The growth rates show a difference between scale and momentum. Domestic travelers represented the largest base, while overseas arrivals had the fastest reported annual growth among the three categories. Canadian visitation increased more modestly but still reached 3.3 million for the year.
The following figures summarize the annual picture without mixing annual totals with quarterly measurements:

Quarterly travel patterns in 2024
VISIT FLORIDA estimated 40.6 million visitors in the first quarter of 2024, up 1.2% year over year and the largest quarterly total on record at that point. Domestic visitation reached 37.2 million, up 0.2%. Overseas visitation was 2.1 million, up 18.4%, while Canadian visitation reached 1.3 million.
The first-quarter visitor mix was 91.6% domestic, 5.2% overseas, and 3.2% Canadian. For Florida domestic non-resident travel, the air and non-air mix was 38.2% by air and 61.8% non-air. That distinction matters when interpreting airport activity: a substantial share of domestic visitors arrived by means other than air.
Second-quarter visitation totaled 34.2 million, up 1.7% year over year and a record for the quarter. Domestic visitation reached 31.5 million, up 1.8%; overseas visitation reached 2.0 million, up 1.8%; and Canadian visitation totaled 739,000. Domestic visitors made up 92.1% of the quarter, compared with 5.8% overseas visitors and 2.2% Canadian visitors.
Third-quarter visitation reached 34.6 million, up 1.8% year over year and the highest third-quarter total on record. Domestic visitation was 31.8 million, up 1.8%. Overseas visitation reached 2.3 million, up 1.9%, and Canadian visitation was 582,000, up 2.5%. The reported shares were 91.8% domestic, 6.6% overseas, and 1.7% Canadian.
Fourth-quarter visitation totaled 33.1 million, the highest fourth-quarter total on record. Domestic visitors numbered 29.9 million, overseas visitors 2.5 million, and Canadian visitors 742,000. These fourth-quarter counts are reported as totals by origin; the supplied VISIT FLORIDA summary does not attach year-over-year changes to each category.

Tourism spending and economic impact
VISIT FLORIDA’s 2024 economic impact report estimated that Florida’s travel and tourism industry generated $133.6 billion in economic impact. Tourism accounted for 7.8% of Florida’s nominal gross state product. Visitor spending reached $134.9 billion, up 3.0% from 2023.
The industry supported 1.8 million jobs in 2024. Tourism-supported wages totaled $79.9 billion, including $44.0 billion in direct tourism wages. The tourism workforce grew 1.8% during the year, while tourism-supported wages increased 4.6% year over year.
Travel also generated public revenue. Tourism-related activity produced $33.6 billion in federal, state, and local taxes, and taxes generated by travel and tourism rose 3.3% in 2024. The report states that every $1 spent by a visitor kept 99 cents in Florida’s economy, while worker salaries captured 59 cents of each visitor dollar.
The household effect was also quantified in the report. Florida’s 9.1 million households would pay $1,730 more per year in state and local taxes without tourism. The report separately describes the result as nearly $2,000 in annual tax savings for each household because of tourism. Those figures are report statements about modeled economic effects, not a direct bill sent to individual households.

Air travel and major Florida airports
Florida’s airport network handled substantial passenger volumes during the periods reported by the individual airports. VISIT FLORIDA reported that the state’s 19 major airports reached 25.6 million enplanements in the third quarter of 2024, up 1.3% year over year. Enplanements measure departing passenger boardings, so this figure is not the same as total airport passengers or statewide visitors.
Orlando International Airport handled 57,735,726 total passengers in calendar year 2023. Tampa International Airport handled 23,948,889 passengers in calendar year 2023, up 11.24% from 2022. Miami International Airport handled 55,926,566 passengers in 2024, including 30,762,231 domestic and 25,164,335 international passengers.
These airport totals cover different calendar years and should be compared with their dates in mind. They also measure airport passenger activity rather than unique visitors to Florida; one traveler can create more than one passenger movement, and not every airport passenger is a leisure visitor.
Miami International Airport statistics
Miami International Airport’s “About Us” information reports that MIA and Miami-Dade County general aviation airports generate $181.4 billion in annual economic impact and support 843,000 direct, indirect, induced, and related jobs. MIA handled 3,008,715 U.S. tons of freight in 2024: 474,867 domestic tons and 2,533,849 international tons.
MIA ranked first in the United States for international freight and second for international passengers. It ranked eighth for total passengers and eighth for total number of operations. Its airfield covers 3,230 acres and has four runways measuring 13,016, 10,506, 9,355, and 8,600 feet.
The same airport information lists 92 carriers in April 2026, including 32 U.S. carriers, 60 international carriers, and 16 charter carriers. In that April 2026 snapshot, MIA served 188 nonstop destinations: 85 domestic and 103 international. The date is important because these carrier and destination counts describe April 2026, not the 2024 passenger total.
MIA’s total commercial aircraft movements in 2025 were 498,697, split between 272,940 domestic and 225,757 international movements. A movement is an aircraft arrival or departure, so it is a different measure from passengers, freight tonnage, or destinations.

Orlando International Airport statistics
Orlando International Airport handled 57,735,726 total passengers in 2023, including 7,024,086 international passengers. The airport occupies 12,264 acres, making it the fourth-largest U.S. airport by land area, and has four parallel north-south runways. Its facilities include 19,153 paved parking spaces and 7 million square feet under roof.

Orlando International Airport is within a two-hour drive of more than 60% of Florida’s population and hosts more than 20 on-airport cargo companies. It also has more flights to U.S. destinations than any other Florida airport.
The airport’s passenger statistics board reports 58.6 million passengers for the rolling 12 months ended July 2024, up 6.5%. In that stats-board period, 87.3% of passengers were domestic and 12.7% were international. The airport ranked first in Florida for total passengers in the year ended March 2024, second in the United States for origin-and-destination passengers in the year ended December 2023, and sixth in the United States for non-U.S.-resident port-of-entry passengers year to date through June 2024.
For calendar year 2023, the stats board ranked Orlando International seventh in the United States and 18th worldwide for total passengers. These rankings use the periods shown by the airport and are not interchangeable with the 2023 fact-sheet total.
