Where to see spring wildflowers in central FloridaQ: Hi! I am going to be in Orlando the first week of April for the National Science Teachers Association Convention. I will have some free time to explore, and I want to know where I can find good places to see spring wildflowers. I would be willing to drive 50 miles or so from Orlando. I am interested in "wild" types of areas such as state parks as opposed to Disney-type parks! Thanks for your help! -- Kris Light, Oak Ridge, Tenn. A: Well, seeing as you're a teacher and I have an answer, I guess I should raise my hand first! It's great that you want to explore Florida's natural side. (And I'm impressed that, being from a few states north, you were even aware that Florida has a natural side.) Not too far from Orlando near Apopka, Wekiwa Springs State Park is a place I think you'll really enjoy. When I was there in September, I saw several different kinds of wildflowers. Granted, September isn't spring, but I figure the chances are good for there to be additional flowers there when you go. Also, you won't be too far from Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge on the Atlantic Coast. You can just take Highway 50 east from Orlando and watch for the big brown sign pointing the way to the refuge. Keep going east. You'll cross a bridge and see more signs. Make sure to stop at the visitor center and to go down the Blackpoint drive, a 7-mile loop where you should be able to spot lots of wildflowers (and birds, birds, birds!). Finally, if you're not too opposed to a park-like setting, consider visiting Henry P. Leu Gardens right in Orlando. Leu has both a native plant garden and a butterfly garden (in addition to rose and camellia gardens, etc.), which are good for more than a few wildflowers. Have fun, and take some neat pictures for your students! Do you have a question? Contact the editor. |
