Q: We will be snorkeling in Key West in July. Do we need to use snorkel vests? We are all good swimmers, but I have already bought a snorkel vest for our 8-year-old. -- Doug
A: A snorkel vest for a child is a good idea, Doug, so you're on the right track.
In my opinion, using a snorkel vest is a matter of personal preference. If you know you are a strong swimmer and are comfortable with snorkeling, then you may want to do without one.
I consider myself a good swimmer and never swim or snorkel alone (important!), but I prefer to use a vest when snorkeling because it helps me float on top of the water. Some snorkelers like to dive down to look at things, and a vest would make this harder to do.
I think the same thing goes for flippers. Some snorkelers find that they help propel them through the water, but others feel more natural and free without them.
Whatever equipment you choose to use, please remember to keep our fragile coral reefs in mind and refrain from touching, breaking or standing on them. Click here for more snorkeling tips and information about coral reefs.
