Where to camp and boat near Florida's north-central Gulf

Q: We (7 kids and 4 adults) are looking for a camping area on the Gulf -- or a river with boat access to the Gulf -- in the mid/central Florida area, or north of Weeki Wachee. We don't mind completely roughing it, but state parks are OK, too. We are hoping to find something with swimming and fishing. We will be using tents and we have a boat. I have had no luck getting any info on the Internet (just too much garbage to pick through). Any suggestions would be appreciated. -- Thanks, Stephanie

A: Thanks for your question, Stephanie. The Internet is a big place, so it's no wonder you had trouble finding info. That's what we're here for!

A couple years ago, I camped with friends at a place that sounds as though it's what you're looking for. At Chassahowitzka River Campground and Recreation Area (352-382-2081), you've got a shady campground and a boat launch near a spring that feeds into Chassahowitzka River right by Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge, which is mostly water. I think this campground is run by Citrus County, and it's just south of Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park. This park used to be a zoo, and several injured animals, including manatees, still live there year-round, so it would be a hit with the kids as a side trip.

Hope this is just the thing for you.
