Q: I have a 6-hour layover at Miami Airport on June 2. Are there some birding or other nature observation possibilities available nearby in that amount of time? -- Karen
A: Karen, that's what I call birding on the fly!
There are 2 places that come to mind. One is to the east, Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. The other is to the west, Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41), which goes through the Everglades and borders Everglades National Park.
Bill Baggs State Park is at the southern tip of Key Biscayne in Biscayne Bay. Here, you're likely to see birds like various herons and egrets, sanderlings and killdeers. Because you'll be here in the summer, you might get a chance to see a magnificent frigatebird. You can rent a bike and enjoy the beach for a while.
Along Tamiami Trail west of Krome Avenue (County Road 997), you could stop on the side of the road to watch for herons, egrets, anhingas, cormorants and even the endangered Everglades snail kite, which I once saw along this road. You also may be interested in some of the Miccosukee tribe attractions, such as airboat rides, that are offered here.
As for getting to either of these places, consider renting a car for a couple hours (you probably would be charged for the whole day) or hail a taxi (maybe the same price as renting a car).
