Q: Do big alligators ever go after kayaks? More one season than another? -- Mark
A: Yes and yes. At different times, I have heard from a few people who have experienced alligators butting their kayak or canoe. I think these instances occurred during alligator mating season, when alligators tend to be more aggressive and when they tend to travel more. (Who knows? Maybe they think the canoe or kayak is a rival for a mate.) Alligator mating season in Florida is roughly April-June, according to a wildlife calendar by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
I have never experienced an aggressive alligator while paddling, however, and I have peacefully shared the waters with alligators many times. It's always a good idea to be cautious near alligators.
