Camping near Disney WorldQ: Hi. I wish to camp in Florida the first 2 weeks of July 2001. I am interested in family camping near Disney World. I have a small hard-top trailer. Thank you. A: Aha! I have been wondering when I would get this question. I take it you're visiting Mickey Mouse and want to save money by camping. But it could be you want to camp in the Orlando / Kissimmee area, and thought a side trip to Disney World would be fun. First, let me point out something you may have already thought of: Camping in Florida in July can be really hot, so I hope your trailer has some kind of cooling system. Touring the parks all day under the hot sun -- then coming back to the trailer to try to sleep in the heat -- could make for a tiring vacation. The first campsite to consider is Disney's own Fort Wilderness Campground. It's as close to the theme parks as you can get, and as a guest, you get free transportation to any of the Disney parks. Fort Wilderness is well-maintained. The only drawback is that, on holidays / special event weekends, you'll pay as much for the campsite as you would for an inexpensive motel in Kissimmee. Also consider nearby Tropical Palms Resort (800-64-PALMS), which is 3 miles away; Orange Grove Campground (407-396-6655), which is 5 miles away; or Great Oak Camping and RV Resort (407-396-9092), which is 6 miles away. These sites have or are near to any amenity and are likely to host other families who are touring Disney World and the other Orlando theme parks. Definitely call now to check the availability of the Fort Wilderness Campground. And it wouldn't hurt to call the other places now to ask about their rates. It usually seems that once you decide where to stay on a trip, the other details fall into place. Have fun! Do you have a question? Contact the editor. |
