Florida Alligator Rides

Q: Hello, how are you? It's been years since I was in Florida. Seems I remember seeing signs along the highway advertising "alligator rides." Was this all just a big joke? I told my friends, and they laughed me out of the house. Please help solve this for me. I am the laughingstock in Tennessee ... ha ha ha.

A: Aww. Be the laughingstock no more. I know of no place that allows people to sit on alligators and ride them like horses. But you're probably right about the signs. My best guess, however, is that the actual ride took place on an airboat, out in the wetlands where you could see alligators. The signs probably misled people on purpose so they would show up to see what the "alligator ride" was all about. Once travelers were there, the airboat operators offered to take them for a ride. Makes sense to me.
